The Signless is dead.

The mutant heretic was righteously executed by the empire for acts of heresy and treason along with his disciple. His jade-blooded guardian was sold into slavery and the yellow blood was taken by the Empress to be her Helmsman shortly after. His body was left to the sun and wild beasts, still chained to the pillar as a warning to his followers and any other rebels.

Or so the public (and the empire) were led to believe. In reality the Signless was saved from death, just barely, by a mysterious female troll. She came to him, after the crowds had cleared and he had been left to rot, and released him from his shackles. She brought him to a small group of his followers, hidden in secret to mourn the loss of their leader. The group were shocked but hastily accepted the Signless though at that point he was more dead than alive. In all the confusion and rush to help him the female troll discreetly left, leaving behind only a book of the Signless's sermons penned by his disciple. It was rumored among the few who knew of the revival that she was Death's Handmaid herself.

The Signless survived his failed execution but not unscathed. It took almost a full sweep for him to halfway recover. His wrists were so badly burned from his shackles it was a miracle his hands didn't have to be amputated. The damage made movement in his hands and wrists incredibly difficult and the nerve damage left him with no feeling in his hands. He keeps them bandaged as often as he can. The scars from the beatings he received during his captivity remain on his body.

Once he was well enough he did resume his travels, always on the move, always alone save for the book of his sermons. He adopted a sign, the shape of his shackles his followers had adopted after his "death". He even took on a false name, the Deadener. After discovering the fates of his surviving companions, he searched for the Dolorosa but was ultimately unsuccessful in locating her. The majority of his time was spent either traveling or preaching, in secret, but his words were harsher and his language much more foul than before. Not that the few who gathered in secret to listen to him knew who he really was. This angry scarred man was just a devoted follower, carrying on His word in his own way.

Because the Signless was dead.

And in his place stood the Sufferer.
